-
January 25, 2007
Contact: Cathryn Stephens, Marketing and Administration
Supervisor Cathryn.e.stephensCa~ci.eugene.or.us, 682-5430
New baggage screening machines will streamline check-in and
provide better security for air travelers at the Eugene Airport
Newly installed Reveal CT-80 baggage scanning machines are providing faster
service for travelers through the Eugene Airport. The new machines allow for a
higher level of security with automated explosives detection capabilities. Four
machines, valued at more than $330,000 each, were installed at the Eugene
Airport by the Transportation Security Administration.
I~I The machines are the first reduced-sized Explosive Detection Systems certified
~t by the TSA designed and built to meet government requirements following the
September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. They will eventually be able to be placed
in-line or behind the ticketing area.
The equipment means less baggage handling, requiring less labor, and will help
reduce the risk of injuries to TSA staff. The new system can process 100 bags an
hour, which makes the security scanning process more efficient for airlines and
ultimately for passengers.
This joint project, including five regional airports in Oregon, was proposed by the
~I Oregon Airport Management Association. Members of Oregon's Congressional
Delegation worked with local and national TSA leaders, to secure machines for
the Eugene, Redmond and Medford airports. The Klamath Falls and Coos
County airports are slated to receive the machines at a later date.
The mission of the Eugene Airport is to support quality airport facilities and services that meet
' regional needs. The Eugene Airport is the second busiest airport in the State of Oregon
supporting commercial service and general aviation activity.
Eugene Airport • City of Eugene • www.eugeneairport.com
28855 Lockheed Drive, Eugene, Oregon 97402-9500, (541) 682-5430, (541) 682-6838 FAX
