I
~ ~ _ ~
February 2, 2007

I, CONTACT: Tony Jobanek, Street Surface Supervisor, 541-682-4800
From Public Information Section, 682-5523 or 954-2938
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Watch for Lane Closures as Concrete Street Repairs Begin in Eugene
Beginning Monday, February 5, Eugene Public Works will begin its annual concrete street
~I panel maintenance and repair program.
li On Monday, Public Works Maintenance crews will start repairing panels at two locations.
The first work zone is on 16th Avenue between Hilyard and Patterson streets, and 16th Avenue is
i scheduled to be closed to westbound traffic until Wednesday, February 14. The second work
zone is on 14th Avenue between Kincaid and Alder streets. The westbound travel lane of 14th
between Alder and Kincaid will be closed for up to 12 days after the project begins.
Eugene has approximately 30 miles of concrete streets in its 516-mile street system.
Each year, repairs are scheduled based on a variety of factors, including amount of damage, use
i
II of the street, and availability of funds. Typically, the repair work includes removing the old
pavement, making minor subsurface repairs if needed, pouring new concrete, and keeping traffic

j off the new surface until the concrete has thoroughly cured, usually about two weeks. In 2006,
Public Works crews repaired more than 28,000 square feet of concrete streets using more than
III 700 cubic yards of concrete in the process.
Eugene also has an annual program to repair its asphalt streets. Unlike concrete repairs,
which can be done during cool and damp conditions, asphalt repairs are best done when it's
warm and dry. This year's asphalt pavement preservation program is scheduled to begin in May.

I
Both the concrete and asphalt repair programs are funded primarily with state and local motor
vehicle fuel taxes.
For updates on local road repair projects, call the metro roadwork hotline at 984-8484, or
on the web at www.eugene-or.gov/pw.
I
Eugene Public Works • www.eugene-or.gov/pw
~I 858 Pearl Street, Eugene, Oregon 97501 •541-682-5523 • fax 541-682-6826 • e-mail pwadmin@ci.eugene.or.us
~I
