<br /> 2008 Road Repair Projects Scheduled to Begin This Week
<br /> More tha 46 lane miles of streets in Eugene are scheduled for overlay or slurry seal types of
<br /> repairs this s mmer, with work slated to start on some streets as soon as this week. Total estimated
<br /> cost of 2008 avement preservation projects is approximately $5.5 million.
<br /> "We cont Hue to focus on saving streets before they fall into complete disrepair," said Public
<br /> Works spoke man Manager Eric Jones. "As a community, we still face the challenge of finding long-
<br /> term road re air solutions to bring the backlog of repair projects under control."
<br /> When Eu ene's pavement preservation program began in 2003, the estimated backlog of repairs
<br /> to improved ity streets stood at $67 million. Since then, more than 100 lane miles of City streets
<br /> have been r paired through the program, yet the backlog has grown to $173 million because streets
<br /> are failing fa ter than the rate of repairs the city can afford to do each year.
<br /> Funding or this year's projects comes primarily from Eugene's 5-cent-per-gallon local fuel tax.
<br /> Additional re enue is coming from a portion of the transportation system development charges paid
<br /> by new deve opment and from federal Surface Transportation Program (Urban) funds.
<br /> Some 23 lane miles of overlay paving is scheduled to begin in mid-May and continue through the
<br /> summer. St eets being overlaid include East 13th Avenue (Franklin Boulevard to Agate Street), 27tH
<br /> Avenue (Am zon Parkway to Jefferson Street), Barger Drive (Highway 99 to Altimont Street, and
<br /> also Primros Street to Terry Street), Chad Drive (Coburg Road to the east end of Chad), Chambers
<br /> Street (Railr ad Boulevard to Eighth Avenue), and Roosevelt Boulevard (Chambers Street to
<br /> Beltline). Eu ene Sand & Gravel has been awarded the bid for the East 13th Avenue work, and
<br /> Wildish Con truction has been awarded the bid for all the other projects except Roosevelt Boulevard,
<br /> which has n t yet been awarded.
<br /> This yea 's repairs to concrete streets include concrete panel replacement currently under way at
<br /> Villard Stree and 15th Avenue work on Mill Alley between 12th and 13th avenues.
<br /> Also this summer, more than 23 lane miles of local streets will receive a surface preservation
<br /> treatment ca led slurry sealing. That work is scheduled to begin in July and be completed by late
<br /> August. Str ets scheduled for these repairs include: Almaden Street, Arthur Street, Fillmore Street,

<br /> ~ Grant Street Hayes Street, Taylor Street, 10th Avenue, 12th Avenue,14th Avenue, and 15th Avenue in
<br /> the west do ntown area, Bethesda Street, Elizabeth Street, Fergus Avenue, Hawthorne Avenue,
<br /> Hilton Drive, Knoop Lane, Marcum Lane, Nebraska Street, and Wood Avenue in the Echo Hollow
<br /> area; Aldabr Street, Alphonse Avenue, Amirante Street, Astove Avenue, Burnett Avenue, Cody
<br /> Avenue, Co tivy Avenue, Dakota Avenue, Lemuria Street, Minnesota Street, Ohio Street, Praslin

<br /> ! Street, and isconsin Street in the west Barger area, and Creekside Way and Sterling Woods Drive
<br /> in the north ilham area.
<br /> Paveme t overlay work on Mill/Broadway/Franklin between 11th and Sixth avenues will also take
<br /> place this s mmer as part of the courthouse district transportation improvement project.
