(3) In addition to EC 9.8165 (1) and (2) above, criteria for designation of a historic
resource that was moved, is primarily commemorative in intent, or less than fifty years of
age shall include the following considerations:
(a) A historic resource moved from its original location or a place that has
historic significance can be eligible if it has historic architectural significance
or is the surviving property most importantly associated with a historic
person or event.
The bunkhouse is one of three surviving buildings that were designated as City of Eugene
Historic Landmarks in 1979. Moving the bunkhouse to a storage area, and then to its permanent
location west of the station is deemed appropriate since it was located somewhere in this vicinity
prior to1948. The bunkhouse will eventually be rehabilitated to function for railroad use in the
future after funds are obtained. The building retains its historic architectural significance as a
vernacular industrial structure associated with the development of the train station in the 19t''
century.
(b) A historic resource that is primarily commemorative in intent can be eligible
if design, age, tradition, or symbolic value has invested it with its own
historic significance.
The bunkhouse is not commemorative as it is not an object, making this criterion not applicable.
(c) A historic resource achieving significance within the last fifty years can be
eligible if it is of exceptional importance.
The bunkhouse is more than 50 years old, making this criterion not applicable.
Decision
The moving of the bunkhouse onto property owned by the City will consolidate all three railroad
buildings into public ownership. Because the buunkhouse will be eventually returned to railroad
use, and rehabilitated, it will retain its historic landmark status as approved in September of
1979, and amended by the above referenced evaluation to the applicable criteria of Section
9.8165 Historic Landmark Designation Approval Criteria.
Based on the above findings and conclusions, this move request is approved with the following
conditions. The recommendations are optional.
Conditions
1. The windows of the bunkhouse will be covered with a minimum thickness plywood or
boaxds of 3/4 inch dimension that are screwed into the casements. The building shall be
appropriately braced at the interior to stabilize it for the move. The brick chimney shall

Findings & Decision: Southern Pacific Bunkhouse (HM 03-1) September 25, 2003 Page 6
