MECREDY Russ
From: JONES Eric R
Sent: Friday, July 09, 2004 12:23 PM
To: MECREDY Russ
Subject: Update on depot activities
1 won't be at next Monday's (7/12) depot meeting, so here's a quick summary of recent activities related to pr and
legislation:
Eugene Celebration Parade
I have developed an implementation plan (see amtrakparade.doc, below) and am working with Rose Blackson on the
details of "It's EC to Take the Train" parade entry on September 18. I've'talked with Glen S about using one of the
downtown Facility carts as the "locomotive engine," and 1 plan to contact Dave Yarbrough next week about using the
antique baggage cart-for the entry. Costs to the City should be minimal (a little signage, perhaps a banner). No real policy
issues at this time, except perhaps a question about political propriety in spending public to thank Congressman
DeFazio during the height of the political campaign season. I may seek direction from City Attorneys; and/or I can ask
Rose to pick up any costs related to thanking DeFazio.
OPRAC Meeting
I believe the next meeting of the Oregon Passenger Rail Advisory Committee is September 17 in Eugene. Some of the
folks from AORTA thought the OPRAC members might like an early (i.e., before the dedication) tour of the station. I
explained that I wasn't sure if Amtrak would be fully involved in moving back into the rehabbed depot but that I'd pass the
request along to you. Local OPRAC members include Scott Meisner, Ed Bergeron, Cathy Briner and (possibly) Ruth
Bascom.
Station Dedication
The event is on for Monday, September 20. DeFazio has confirmed. I've touched bases with Jason Heuser at IGR, had
lunch with the folks from AORTA (including Bob Krebs) and have given the event plan (see depotdedication.doc, below) to

,•Scott Meisner. We'll be ordering premiums (luggage tags and buttons) in the next week or two. Things seem generally to
be on track for the dedication, although many of the dignitaries still need to be confirmed (e.g., will Bruce Warner be there,
who's coming from Amtrak, etc.). Two policy questions: how much should the City put toward the event (total costs
probably in the $1,500 to $2,000 range) and how much, specifically, should be charged to the project? Also, we need to
decide who has a speaking role at the event. On the attached plan I've marked potential speakers with an asterisk; we
should decide if the list needs paring.
Upcoming Legislation
.The group should place on a future agenda (but not too far in the future) .what positions we'd like the City to take vis a vis
train service/depot projects with the Oregon Legislature and Congress. I expect Jason will be developing the legislative
policies for the 2005 Oregon legislative session early this fall. -The "united front" agenda is still quite a few months away;
however, Council may want alarger/earlier role in that process so it couldn't hurt to know what our preferred positions are
relative to train service/depot projects.
amfrakparade.doc Depot
(45 KB) edicaUon.doc (58 KE
Thanks,
Eric Jones
Public Affairs Manager
Eugene Public Works
eric. r.
Jones@ci. eugene. or. us
(541) 682-5523
(541) 682-6826 (fax)
(541) 954-2938 (cell)
www. ci. eugene. or. us/pw
1
