Public Works
City of Eugene
858 Pearl Street
Eugene, Oregon 97401
June 29, 2004 (541) 682-52x2....
(541) 682-6826 Fax
Susie Smith, Manager
Metropolitan Wastewater Management Commission
City of Springfield
Department of Public Works
225 5th Street
Springfield, OR 97477
Susie:
It has been a real pleasure and certainly a learning experience to work with you over
these ast several months as ou have navi ated the numerous com lex MWMC issues
p Y g p
through the adoption and approval process. With the Eugene City Council's adoption of

.the FY05 Budget, Facilities Plan, and SDC Methodology last night, I know you are
looking forward to getting back to the real world.
A while back you described the overall situation as a `house of cards' and the aptness of
your description became increasingly evident as things went along. I want to take this
opportunity to commend you for your efforts and to let you know how much I appreciate
your dedication, commitment, and toughness. As you know, we are engaged in careers
with no shortage of critics - I am absolutely certain that despite today's critics of what
you have accomplished here, you will be considered a visionary in the years to come.
You have contributed in a meaningful way and inspired others to get involved, including
me.
Our communities and our region would not achieve their respective goals without strong
leadership. Thank you for your leadership and continued commitment to helping meet
some of ours: Thanks also for inviting me along for the ride - it has been a memorable
experience. I look forward to working with you and your staff as we now approach the
opportunity to actually put some of these plans into effect.
Kindest regards,
Kurt Corey, P.E.
Director of Public Works

Cc: Dan Brown, P.E.
Director of Public Works, City of Springfield
