Letter to Mayor Kitty Piercy

- March 9, 2006
Page two
the basement. For security reasons, judges and other federal officials will use these parking
stalls. None of the spaces will be available to the public. So jurors, lawyers, the public and
many of the building's other federal employees will have to park one, two, three or more blocks
away-and cross busy Mill Street... Judge Hogan said he's concerned about getting employees
and the public safely to the courthouse, because they will have to cross busy Mill Street near
where the road becomes elevated leading to and from the Ferry Street Bridge."
During my tenure as the United States Attorney for the District of Oregon, I have not seen
an issue about which our employees in our Eugene office have been as uniformly and seriously
concerned as this one, both from the standpoint of lack of available parking, as well as for safe.
access to and from the new courthouse. All of them have seen firsthand from watching Ms.
.Baker's injuries and prolonged recovery period what can happen, even to someone who is paying .
attention to safety issues. I believe we owe it to them to at least attempt to obtain parking spaces
in reasonable proximity to the Wayne Morse Courthouse. The proposed city parking garage will
accomplish that, and is greatly needed. I urge you and the Council to continue to support its
development at your next council meeting.
Thank you very much for your consideration.
Sincerely,
KARIN J. IMMERGUT
United States Attorney.
_k
~ ~ ~
~
~ ~
C.N'~N~`~
~
