COREY Kurt A
Subject: FW: State of the City Document--Inclusion of Priority Issues Information
The purpose of the neighborhood initiative is to build strong neighborhoods by developing community leadership
and working collaboratively with residents to achieve the delivery of City services and neighborhood priorities.
Three key objectives are targeted: 1) focus service delivery to better meet neighborhood needs and priorities; 2)
enhance public engagement activities; and 3) support neighborhood involvement by empowering all neighborhood
associations in problem-solving.
City staff are partnering with Neighborhood Leaders and Associations to refine the Neighborhood Association
Initiative Action Plan (NAIAP) approved by the City Council in November 2005. The NAIAP process is resulting
in developing stronger relationships between neighborhood leaders and staff. The process will culminate with a
Neighborhood Summit scheduled for February 07. The summit is designed to facilitate participation and open
dialogue among a large group consisting of neighborhood leaders, city staff and formal community leaders. The aim
of the summit is to gain agreement on the top action items in the NAIAP for the City Council to consider. The
actions implemented to date are listed below.
• The Neighborhood Initiative received $100,000 of allocated on-going funding to support the implementation of
the NAIAP.
• The Council also approved special funding to re-instate the. Neighborhood Matching Grants (Action Item #4).
Staff has developed.an administrative framework for the program and has a strong outreach campaign to
encourage participation in the program.
• .The Council also approved two new Planner positions to work on opportunity siting and infill standards
program development (Action Item #12).

• Telecomm Funds were approved to develop an application so that neighbors can get their newsletters online
instead of in the mailbox (part of Action Item #6).
i
I
I
i
i
I
I
1
