Nal all llae inzptxcls sztlzzzzzaz'zed in_t12is yyt~mo arse the_respunsibilily-vf the--University of Oregon. -
Tyie City_of
Eugene, the Science Factory,.. and Emerald-Valley BMX are also responsible for ome
mitigation measures. Impacts and recommendations are organized by responsible party.
LITTER AND TRASH
The placement of additional trash receptacles and post game clean-up efforts have been
successful at reducing the level of litter in the park from previous years. Additionally, trash
receptacles are emptied during the game and recycling stations have been added to University
parking areas. All of these actions have further improved the impacts of trash on the park,
however certain amounts of litter remain. Although post-game monitoring was conducted after
the regularly scheduled park clean-up by area youth crews, game related trash and litter was
observed during each monitoring effort. The individual's performing park monitoring pickup
litter from various areas within the park. Mitigation of these impacts is a medium priority and
should be in place prior to the 2003 football season.
1. Main corridor path between the Autzen footbridge over the Willamette and Autzen
stadium. This is the area of the park that receives the most pre and post-game pedestrian
traffic. In particular, significant amounts ofgame-related trash were found along the river, up
and down stream of the Autzen footbridge.
2. Nature trails east of main path. Informal, unpaved paths spur off of the main path to
Autzen stadium.. These paths go through areas that are recognized as high quality habitat
given the diversity of intact native vegetation. Although smaller amounts of trash are found
along these trails, residual traces do exist and are problematic given the sensitive nature of
the area.
3. Lots 8 and 9. Less trash was observed in lots 8 and 9 from last year although reports of trash
were still noted in lot 9 and around the berm.
Recommendation: The City of Eugene will work with collection crews to improve upon
existing work. While current collection efforts have been successful at cleaning up a great
majority of trash, there is still room for improvement. This involves a more thorough
cleaning along the river, along the nature trail spurs, and in Lots 8 and 9.
4. Souvenir give-a-ways. An improvement was noted in the amount of plastic litter debris
from souvenir give-a-ways.
Recommendation: The University of Oregon will continue with efforts to use bio-
degradable souvenirs, recycling and collection boxes at stadium exits, or enhanced clean-up
following games when souvenirs are given away.

ABP Monitoring- 2002 Season Summary Page 2
