~ i i ~ <br /> March 23, 1998 <br /> ONTACT: Michael Robert, Hendricks Park Head Gardener, 682-5324 <br /> F~om Public Information Section, 682-5523 <br /> F{~R IMMEDIATE RELEASE <br /> I~ <br /> TOURS BEGIN IN APRIL AT HENDRICKS PARK RHODODENDRON GARDEN <br /> i <br /> A sure sign of spring is the start of tours at the internationally renowned Hendricks Park <br /> ododendron Garden. Park staff will lead tours of the garden every Sunday in April and May. <br /> T urs begin at 1 p.m. in the park picnic shelter on Summit Avenue. <br /> The tours keep pace with seasonal changes, focusing on trees, rhododendrons and other <br /> s}>?rubs, ground covers, bulbs and native plants as they come into bloom. People coming often will <br /> halve the opportunity to see a full season of flowers. Information is provided about the history of <br /> Hendricks Park and the Rhododendron Garden founders, pioneers in horticulture who collected and <br /> h}~bridized rhododendrons and gave them to the park for everyone to enjoy. The gardeners also are <br /> a~ailahle to answer questions about garden culture. <br /> II People attending the tours are encouraged to wear sturdy walking shoes for the hillside <br /> gr vel paths. Portions of the garden are accessible to people using wheelchairs. If tour participants <br /> need special arrangements, please call the Hendricks Park office at 682-5324 at least 48 hours in <br /> adllvance. Group tours of the rhododendron garden and rentals of the picnic shelter may be arranged <br /> by' calling the Public Works Maintenance Office at 682-4800. To preserve the fragile environment <br /> in he garden area, pets, sports and games, and organized group activities are not allowed. <br /> To reach the park, follow Walnut Street to Fairmount Boulevard, then go east on Summit <br /> Avenue.
