i ~ ~ i <br /> ~~iApril 1, 1998 <br /> CONTACT: Scott Plamondon, Urban Forester, 682-4819 <br /> (From Public Information Section, 682-5523 <br /> I~FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE <br /> HUNDREDS OF TREE PLANTINGS TO MARK ARBOR WEEK IN EUGENE <br /> Eugene's urban forest will grow by almost 200 trees over the next week as local residents and <br /> Eugene Public Works staff join forces to celebrate Arbor Week. <br /> More than 20 groups, ranging from Cub Scouts to Navy reservists, have signed up to plant 198 <br /> trees throughout the city beginning Saturday, April 4, and continuing through Saturday, April 10. Arbor <br /> IfWeek is a national event coordinated in early April each year by the National Arbor Day Foundation, a <br /> (nonprofit education organization dedicated to tree planting and environmental stewardship. <br /> In conjunction with Arbor Week, Eugene has received several state and national awards. <br /> The National Arbor Da Foundation has once a ain reco nized Eu ene with a Tree Ci USA <br /> Y g g g ty <br /> i <br /> ~IAward and also honored the city with its Growth Award for innovative tree planting projects. This is the <br /> x'19`'' year Eugene has earned Tree City USA status, in part because of the city's tree ordinance, <br /> omprehensive urban forestry plan, Arbor Week observances, and commitment to spend at least $2 per <br /> (Icapita on community forestry activities. An example of innovative tree planting is Eugene's <br /> ~NeighborWoods program. Local volunteers have planted more than 5,000 street trees since the program <br /> I~was established in 1992. <br /> The Oregon Urban and Community Forest Council has named Eugene as Oregon's Tree City <br /> USA for 1997.
