i i ~ i <br /> ~ i <br /> ;September 16, 1998 <br /> CONTACT: Marcia Peeters, Park Volunteer Coordinator, 682-4845 <br /> From Public Information Section, 682-5523 <br /> FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE <br /> i <br /> YOUTH GROUPS HELP TO CLEAN UP ASCOT PARK IN NORTH EUGENE <br /> Two youth groups will join area neighbors on Saturday, September 19, to clean up Ascot <br /> Park in north Eugene. The cleanup activity begins at 8:30 a.m. and will run through at least <br /> noon. The park is located behind Monroe School at 170 Bailey Lane. <br /> Several hundred people are expected to participate in the cleanup, which includes picking <br /> up garbage and removing blackberries, English hawthorn, and other undesirable vegetation from <br /> an overgrown drainage channel in the park. About 150 youth and adult volunteers from the <br /> i <br /> Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints have accepted the park cleanup as a community <br /> I <br /> ~ service project. The youth are required to do two large community service projects and several <br /> i <br /> ~ small ones each year. <br /> I <br /> Also volunteering are about 40 youngsters and some adults from the Young Marines, a <br /> program established in 1958 for youth ages 8 through 18. In the program youngsters learn to <br /> work as a team, keep up their grades, and stay physically fit.
