~ t.
V
=~r,r~~~w~ i -
~ t~ i. ~
October 15, I998
CONTA~CT~ Kevin Foerstler, Tree Crew Supervisor, 682-4822
From Public Information Section, 682-5523
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
WILDLIFE EXPERT TO CREATE OSPREY NEST ATOP SKINNER BUTTE
Nesting osprey will soon be able to find a home atop Skinner Butte.
Under the direction of Eugene's urban forestry program, a nationally known wildlife
expert is constructing a nesting platform in a large tree that's visible from the parking lot at the
top of Skinner Butte. Larry Weinberg, who has been involved in projects across the Northwest
to create osprey nesting sites, will go to work Friday morning, flattening the top of a wind-

- damaged Douglas fir, removing limbs and using them to weave a natural nest into the tree and
create perching sites. Total cost of the work is estimated at $250.
The idea of the nesting site was suggested by members of the Eugene Downtown Rotary,
who last year "adopted" the top of the butte and undertook a number of public service projects to
make the butte safer and more attractive for park users. Rotary members were particularly
pleased that the nest site will be visible from the parking lot and will further enhance the public's
enjoyment of the popular overlook.
"A pair of osprey has been seen flying in this area," said Kevin Foerstler, supervisor of
the City's tree crew. "So there's a real good chance that a young osprey might be looking for a
home around here in the near future."
-
PubNic Works • Admini$tration • City of Eugene • 858 Pearl • Eugene, OR 97401-2727 • Phone: (541) 682-5262 • FAX (541) 682-6826
