i i i i
January 20, 1998
CONTACT: Vic Martin, Facility Management Division, 682-5008
From Public Information Section, 682-SS23
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
DILAPIDATED HOUSE AT OWEN ROSE GARDEN RECYCLED
An old house in bad repair at Owen Rose Garden is being removed and recycled for its
yuildmg matcrials. -
The condemned structure, which has become a safety hazard in recent years, originally was
the home of George Owen, a former City Councilor, and his wife, Enid. The Owens donated the
property to the City in 1950 so the land could be developed as a municipal rose garden. For a
number of years the house was used by park maintenance staff as a field off ce and to store supplies
and equipment.
Over the past winter, a new storage and field office was built on the south end of the park.
This week, a crew from BRING Recycling began disassembling the Owen house, recycling as many
materials as possible. The removal work is expected to be completed by April.
~ Hiring BRING to remove and recycle the house is not only environmentally sound, but it's
saving the City money, said Vic Martin of the Public Works Facility Management Division. Martin
estimated that the $2,000 BRING contract is approximately $6,000 less than the City had estimated
I
it would cost to have the house demolished and carted off.
The removal of the Owen House is part of a long-range plan to improve Owen Rose Garden
using money to be gathered through private fundraising efforts. The park master plan, adopted in
1997, envisions such amenities as a gazebo, pond, fountain, overhead trellises, and a community
building to be constructed some day near the site of the old Owen House.

Public Works • Administration • City of Eugene • 858 Pearl .Eugene, OR 97401-2727 • Phone: (541) 682-5262 • FAX (541) 682-6826
