ORc <br /> i i i _ _ i <br /> December 30, 1998 <br /> CONTACT: ave Edwards, NeighborWoods Coordinator, 682-4820 <br /> From Public I formation Section, 682-5523 <br /> FOR IMMED ATE RELEASE <br /> PROG M OFFERS FREE TREES TO PLANT ALONG EUGENE STREETS <br /> Free str et trees are being offered to local property owners this winter as part of an <br /> ongoing progra to enhance Eugene's urban forest. <br /> Throug the NeighborWoods program, the City of Eugene encourages volunteers to plant <br /> nd take care o trees along rights-of--way within city limits. Since the program was started in <br /> 1992, almost 6, 00 street trees have been planted by homeowners, businesses, schools, and civic <br /> roups and othe local organizations. <br /> Here's h w the program works. The City provides street trees suitable for specific <br /> ocations and al o takes care of pruning and other major tasks. NeighborWoods volunteers help <br /> lant the trees if they are able, and they also water, weed, and keep an eye on young street trees, <br /> ~urturing the tre s through the first critical years. Once trees become well established, they <br /> i, <br /> riequire less care lthough watering is always a good idea during periods of drought. <br /> Quantitie of trees are limited, and the best time to plant trees is in the winter or early <br /> spring, so people are encouraged to call before March 15 if they're interested in planting street <br /> t Dees this season.
