i
I
I
9
1
News Release - 1997 Eugene Leaf Program

r? October 21, 19 7
Page 3
City cr ws can't collect scattered leaves or leaf piles that are stacked under-or close to
parked cars. D bris such as branches, rocks, metal, and lawn clippings will not be collected, and
leaf piles con Wing such debris also will also not be picked up because the City cannot deliver
them to people who want leaves for mulch. Residents should pile leaves in the street the
1
weekend befor the scheduled pickup to ensure leaves are picked up during the scheduled
collection time .After the last scheduled pickup in each area, property owners aze responsible
for removing y leaves left in front of their homes.
Here az some additional tips for placing leaves safely in the street:
• Pile 1 ves on the street surface neaz the gutter, keeping gutters and catch basins clear.
• Windr w the leaves so they do not obstruct the flow of water along the curb.
•On str ets without curbs and gutters, pile leaves neaz the street, away from ditches.
•Stack 1 ayes so they don't block bike and traffic lanes or create hazardous situations for
bicyclists and otorists.
•Only p le leaves in a bike lane when there is no other alternative such as hauling the
leaves to a co ercial recycler or placing them on a side street. If there is no alternative but to
place leaves in ike lanes, keep at least half the lane's width open for bicycles.
•Keep s dewalks free of leaves, which are slippery when wet and hazardous for pedestrians.
1997 Leaf Coll tion Schedule
Unless immediate hazard exists, Public Works Maintenance crews follow a schedule
that ensures sy erratic coverage of the city and controls the cost of the program. There are five
collection areas in the city, and each area is scheduled for two collections.
