i i
May 16, 1997
ONTACT: S ott Plamondon, Urban Forester, 682-4800
rom Public In rmation Section, 682-5523
OR IMMED TE RELEASE
APPROXI TELY 15 DISEASED FIRS TO BE REMOVED AT HENDRICKS PARK
Approxi ately 15 fir trees in Hendrick's Park are scheduled to be removed this summer
ecause of dise a and the hazards they pose for nearby residents.
All of th trees to be removed are on the east side of the park and are within 200 feet of
esidences ors ctures. There are approximately 120 fir trees in that general area, and the
~I
kiiseased trees '11 be removed carefully by a contractor to minimize damage to the natural area
well as the w rld-renowned floral garden in Hendricks Park.
Last ye ,the City hired a private consultant to review the health of 233 trees at
endricks Park. That review indicated that approximately 100 of the fir trees in the park were
otentially h dous, and 12 of the most immediate hazards were removed last fall. The C'it 's
Y
rban Forester d his staff have since done a more detailed analysis of 120 fir trees on the east
ide of the park n the vicinity of the picnic shelter, with special attention given to the 42 trees
hich the privat consultant felt were potentially hazardous in that area. A number of causes
ave led to the cline of these trees, including a fungal disease that could spread and infect the
~ntire fir forest i that area.

Public Works • Adminis ation • Oity of Eugene • 858 Pearl • Eugene, OR 97401-2727 • Phone: (541) 682-5262 • FAX (541) 682-6826
