Public Works
Administration

FEBRUARY 8, 1996 City of Eugene
858 Pearl Street

CONTACT: Scott Plamondon, Urban Forester, 465-2818 Eugene, OR 97401
(503) 687-5262
From Public Information Section, 687-5523
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
VOLUNTEERS TO PLANT 30 TREES ALONG AMAZON CREEK ON SATURDAY
Nearly 50 volunteers will gather Saturday morning to plant 30 trees along Amazon Creek
in west Eugene.
The volunteers will plant Oregon ash and ponderosa pines along the Fern Ridge path next
to the Amazon between Bailey Hill Road and the Richardson bicycle bridge. When the young
trees mature, they will provide shade along the bicycle and pedestrian path and help create and
improve creek habitat areas.
Area businesses are donating food, coffee, and a portable restroom. Rexius Forest By-
Products, which has a yard next to a section of the planting area, is donating compost to improve
the soils in which the trees will grow.
Saturday's planting is the first step in a larger project that over the next several years will
beautify and enhance the Amazon Creek environment between Bailey Hill Road and City View.
For more information, or to volunteer for future planting activities, call the City's urban forestry
office at 687-5220.
