To reduce delays and congestion, the new signals provide protected left turns
when the left rn arrow is green and also allow left turns when only the round signal light is
green and ther is no oncoming traffic. Anew signal has been installed but has not yet been
activated at Hi hway 99 and Bethel Drive. This signal will also provide protected and allow
permissive left turns.
To hel travelers at night, street name signs are now illuminated at major intersections
along Highwa 99. Street lighting has been improved to illuminate the full roadway, making it
safer for moto fists and pedestrians.
Bicycl lanes and sidewalks have been installed on both sides of the highway. Access

i ramps make it safer and easier for people to cross streets at intersections.

I
Traffic islands have been installed at a number of intersections on Highway 99. These

~ islands reduce congestion and enhance safety by restricting some left-turn movements. In

!particular, nor bound traffic on Highway 99 can no longer turn left onto Elmira Road, and
eastbound tra is on Elmira can no longer turn left onto Highway 99 northbound. The islands also
provide a place for landscaping and a safety spot for pedestrians.
