_ NEWS REL SE Back to School Safety
Page 2
August 25, 1 95
t
To fu er increase pedestrian safety, crosswalks will be painted across Willakenzie
Road on the ast side of the main school driveway and at the east end of the new retail
center, near a new Oasis Fine Foods store. Motorists are required to yield to pedestrians in
marked cross alks.
Ano r area where City officials are responding to a student pedestrian safety
concern is o Willakenzie Road in the vicinity of Willakenzie Elementary School. Flashing
lights are be' g installed to alert motorists traveling on Willakenzie Road east of Coburg
Road that th speed limit in the school zone is 20 miles per hour when children are present.
The flashers which will be activated by the staff in the school office only when children are
present, will be in operation when school opens this fall.
t
A ne crosswalk also has been painted on Willamette Street at 16th Avenue. The
crosswalk is designed to draw motorist's attention to the high number of pedestrians, in all
age groups, ho frequently cross Willamette Street at this intersection.
The ugene City Council has set goals to increase the use of alternative modes of
transportati in the community. Improved pedestrian safety helps achieve those goals by
encouraging more people to walk.
