If not, now is a good time to check.
Thin s to look for include cracked limbs or trunks, holes, insect damage, fungal growths,
i
rot, split top ,and excessive leaning.
"Wi ter is an excellent time to check trees for hazards because the potential for problems
I,
is greater an it's also easier to see portions of the tree that are normally covered with leaves,"
says Scott P amondon, urban forester with Eugene's Public Works Department. "But be careful
if you're ch king a tree during or immediately after a big storm. Broken limbs that haven't
fallen yet or ees that are touching electrical lines are extremely hazardous."
~ Stro g winds and ice and snow accumulations can cause weakened limbs or trees to fall.
'I Heavy rains erode or saturate soil and further undermine the rooting of an unstable tree.
i 'I

~
Tr that are close to homes, streets, and sidewalks are particularly hazardous because
of the oten al for iri or ro dama e. Do not touch an art of tree that looks like it is
p Jm'Y P 1~rtY g Y P
III
touching a wer line. If there are sparks or other indications of an immediate hazard, cal19-1-1.
Otherwise, 1 the Eugene Water & Electric Board.
If a e is on private property, the property owner is responsible for correcting any unsafe
or hazardou conditions. To avoid the risks associated with pruning or removing a hazard tree,
it's advisabl to contact a professional tree service. Check the Yellow Pages for listings.
If a e is located on public property or in the public right-of--way, the City's Urban
Forestry will take care of hazards. If you see a public tree that appears to be hazardous,
please conta t the Urban Forester at 687-5220.
Works • Admini twn • City of Eugene •858 Pearl Street • Eugene, OR 97401 • Phone: (541)687-5262 • FAX: (541)683-6826
