The 14-
foot-long m unds are designed to slow traffic on the 25 mph residential street. The mounds
extend from curb to curb and are 3 inches high at the center and tapered at the edges. They
are much le s jarring to vehicles than the typical speed bumps installed in parking lots. The
speed hump will be marked with paint, and warning signs will be posted to alert motorists.
The peed humps should take a day or two to install. During construction, traffic will
i
be detoured round the area, and onstreet parking will be temporarily removed in the locations
where the s eed humps are being installed.
~ Spee humps were recommended in a Lincoln Street traffic plan developed by the
i
I
Eugene Pub is Works Department and local neighborhood groups. The goal of the plan is to
"calm" the t affic on Lincoln Street by reducing speeds.
Nath n Duke, a transportation planner with the Public Works Department, said the four
humps insta ed on Lincoln Street in 1994 have been very effective in keeping speeds down.
