Due to exceptionally heavy rains, Friday evening a temporary bypass was
opened that released sanitary sewage directly into the Willamette River near the Greenway
Bicycle Bri ge.
The City of Eugene determined that bypassing the Fillmore pump station was
necessary t relieve flow in the regional sewage collection system. The heavy flow in the
sewage line was caused by infiltration and inflow into the sewer system of water from the
very heavy rains over the past week. The use of emergency overflow from a sanitary sewer
system is a common engineering practice designed to protect public and private property from
sewage bac ps and spills.
Any bacteria present in the sewage released during the bypass should have quickly
dispersed i the high waters of the Willamette River. The overflow should not have harmed
fish or wil life.
I
