Public Works
FEBRUAR 28, 1995 Administration
City of Eugene
CONTACT' Tom Larsen, Project Manager, 341-5886 858 Pearl Street
Eugene, OR 97401

From Publi Information Section, 687-5523 (503) 687-5262
FOR IMM DIATE RELEASE
TRA FIC SIGNAL WORK TO BE DONE ALONG FRANKLIN BOULEVARD
The flow of traffic on Franklin Boulevard between High and Walnut streets will be
improved the result of signal work scheduled to begin today, weather permitting. The
work is ex ected to take at least a month to complete.
Sig al detection loops will be installed in the street surface, which was repaved last
fall. Work rs plan to begin near the intersection of High Street and Sixth Avenue and work
west to Wa nut Street, focusing initially on the side streets along Franklin Boulevard. There
will be inte mittent lane closures where the loops are being installed, and motorists are
advised to se extra caution in the construction areas.
Onc signal detection loops are installed, the Eugene Public Works Department will
switch each signal so it is activated by actual traffic rather than on a timed cycle. The signals
along Fran lin have been running on timed cycles since construction on Franklin Boulevard
began in Ju y 1994. During the past winter, the signals were connected to a master timer to
help allevi e some of the stop-and-go conditions on Franklin.
The final tasks of lane striping, landscaping, and clean-up will also be done this
spring, we her permitting. Approximately $500,000 in State Highway Preservation Funds
were used or the paving portion of the job, which also included $1.8 million in City Sewer
Funds to r lace an aged and deteriorated sanitary trunk sewer in Franklin Boulevard.
