The local tree planting program has been selected to appear in Renew <br /> America's E vironmental Success Index, which features 1,600 case studies of successful <br /> environmen 1 initiatives from around the nation. <br /> The eighborWoods program was developed by the City of Eugene Public Works Department <br /> to increase a number of new trees planted and cared for in the public rights-of--way. <br /> NeighborW ods is a partnership that brings together neighbors, businesses, and local government to <br /> plant and m intain street trees that enhance the environment and the unique identity of each <br /> neighborho Since the program began in 1992, more than 2,000 trees have been planted. <br /> The Environmental Success Index is put together by Renew America, a Washington, D.C.- <br /> based grow founded in 1979 to coordinate a network of community groups, environmental <br /> organizatio ,businesses, governmental leaders, and civic activists involved in environmental <br /> improveme t. The index contains information about 1,600 outstanding environmental programs from <br /> around the ountry and is used by governmental agencies, community organizations, businesses, <br /> environmen alists and the media.
