One big difference: Amazon Creek, which overflowed onto nearby streets
in the early }980s, remained within its banks this year.
In 1 80 and again in 1981, Amazon Creek overflowed onto East and West Amazon
drives, bac ed up onto numerous other streets, and nearly went over its banks west of
Chambers treet. The intersection of 15th Avenue and Hayes Street was under almost four
feet of wat r. Preparations were made to evacuate some residents, and the Danebo Avenue
bridge just north of West 11th Avenue was c}osed for several days for fear it had been
structurally damaged by the swollen creek. As another measure of flood conditions, a total of
650 servic calls were received during the course of the two storms.
(mope)
