Mike Greehan, publisher of Bicycling <br /> magazine, wi 1 present a 1995 "Best Cities for Cycling" award to Mayor Ruth Bascom at a brief <br /> ceremony on Wednesday, December 6. The presentation will be held at 1:30 p.m. outside the <br /> McNutt Roo at Eugene City Hall, 777 Pearl Street and will be followed by a reception and <br /> <br /> I <br /> news confer ce. <br /> In th 1995 judging, Eugene ranked seventh among North American cities with <br /> <br /> i <br /> <br /> it populations f 100,000 or more. 'The other cities in the top 10 were (in order): Toronto; <br /> Portland, Or Tucson, Ariz.; Madison, Wis.; Seattle; Denver; Ottawa, Ontario; Phoenix; and <br /> Vancouver, ritish Columbia. Eugene placed seventh in a similar survey published in 1990 and <br /> third in the agazine's first survey in 1988. <br /> ' Earni g high marks for Eugene in the 1995 survey were a number of factors: nearly 100 <br /> miles of bik lanes, bike routes, and off-street bikeways; the local Center for Appropriate <br /> Transport; a ew City code that decreases the maximum amount of parking spaces for cars; the <br /> variety of to al bike tours and events; and the fact that Eugene bike-related projects account for ' " <br /> approximate y 10 percent of the City's annual transportation expenditures. <br /> (more) <br /> <br />
