As with other public improvements, the sewer system is aging and must be
repaired and maintained to assure the city gets the full life from the system prior to
replacement. With this project, plastic liners will be inserted into the sewer lines to seal
cracks and prevent groundwater from entering the sewer system. Eliminating groundwater
from the sanitary sewer system frees the system's capacity for its intended use of
wastewater collection, and it also reduces the load on the regional sewage treatment plant.
This..,year, the repair work involves approximately 5,000 lineal feet of sewer line in
three areas: in the alley between Tyler and Polk streets from 24th to 26th avenues; in the
alley betty ~ en 19th and 20th avenues from Pearl to Willamette streets; and in various
locations between Lawrence and Polk streets from 20th to 26th avenues. Approximately
120 properties are served by the sewers scheduled to be repaired or rehabilitated.
