Public Works
Administration
City of Eugene
858 Pearl Street
Eugene, OR 97401

~I October 8, 11993 (503) 687-5262
CONTAC Jack Long, City of Eugene Project Manager, 341-5803
From Publ c Information, 687-5523
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

i

III VOLUNTEERS CLEAN UP AMAZON CREEK
Volunteers from the University of Oregon and the Friends of the Amazon
Committee will gather on Sunday, October 10, from 1 to 4 p.m., to remove vegetation
from the Amazon Creek. The group will be removing trees and shrubs from the slopes
of the Amazon Creek between 31st and 33rd avenues. This is in an ongoing effort to
keep the Amazon flowing freely.
Vegetation, such as grasses and porous stemmed plants, help filter pollutants from
stormwater. But, too much woody vegetation, like shrubs and trees, restricts the flow and
leads to blcickages, so it must be removed.
On Monday, city of Eugene crews will chip the removed trees and brush for use
as mulch in city parks.
All stormwater that collects in gutters, catch basins, and roadside ditches
eventually i~Ilows into the Willamette River. In south and west Eugene, stormwater runoff
that enters I he Amazon Creek flows through Fern Ridge Reservoir and into the Long
Tom River before it finally enters the Willamette River.

~I For more information about the cleanup, call 465-2739.

I

i
i
