-f`~
Ice/Snow Plan
The Ice/Snow Plan goes into effect whenever a significant winter storm oc-
' curs. The goals of the plan include providing traffic access on priority
snow routes, ensuring that bus routes are kept open, and keeping runways at
the Eugene Airport operational. During severe winter storms, parking may be
banned on priority travel routes. Public Works operates and coordinates
activities from an Emergency Command Center at 1820 Roosevelt Boulevard
(465-2806).

~ The plan, which was updated after last winter's snow and ice storm, recogniz-
es that the City does not have a bare-pavement policy. Snow plowing and
sanding operations are intended to provide the prudent motorist with a rea-
sonably safe traveling surface. During heavy snowfall or severe icing condi-

~ tions, motorists may need to install chains or other traction devices.
Another plan policy is that the City will not use anti-icing or deicing chem-
icals in quantities required for ice and snow control on streets. Deicing
chemicals with corrosion inhibitors may be used in quantities necessary to
n sandin e ui ment workable.
keep sand stockpiles a d g q p
For ice control, abrasives such as sand are applied along designated routes.
At the end of an ice or snow storm, crews immediately begin picking up sand

~ along priority routes. Bike routes are high on the priority list.
A copy of the updated plan has been placed in the Council Office, along with
a color map showing priority routes. Copies of the plan will be distributed
to local school districts, public transportation providers, and emergency
service providers. A map showing the priority routes and reminding residents
of the parking ban is scheduled to be published Sunday, October 24, in The
Register-Guard. News releases will be sent to local media and neighborhood
organizations.
If you would like more information or copies of the plan or the priority
route map, call Bob Hammitt at 687-5220.

f
