According to Maintenance Director Bob Hammitt, slippery

p~ sidewalks are a hazard to pedestrians, and it is the property owner's responsibility to keep
~r the sidewalk safe and passable.
Parked vehicles on icy and snowy streets can hamper snow plowing and sanding
operations and create problems for motorists traveling on icy streets. Keeping critical snow
I
routes open ensures that emergency vehicles, buses, and traffic can move safety around
town, Hammitt said.
Under an ordinance adopted by the Eugene City Council in 1990, parking is not
allowed on priority one, two, and three streets during periods of sleet, freezing rain, or icy
weather or when more than one inch of snow accumulates on streets within the city limits.
The ordinance also gives the city the authority to tow vehicles parked or stranded along
priority routes, and to close any street to vehicular or pedestrian traffic.
i
