I:
News Release Ferry Street Bridge Hearing
November 19, 1993
Page 2
The Citizen Advisory Committee recommended reconstructing the Ferry Street Bridge
to be eight lanes wide, with bicycle and pedestrian improvements. The advisory group also
recommended to the City Council that a public vote be held on the project.
The Planning Commission chose asix-lane bridge reconstruction. In addition, the
commission recommended building a new bicycle-pedestrian bridge near the Ferry Street Bridge
and a new road and I-105 overpass connecting Centennial Boulevard and Coburg Road.
Both groups supported the idea of realigning the traffic approaches on the south end of
the bridge by relocating the Agripac plant near Franklin Boulevard. Both groups also
recommended additional efforts to increase the use of alternative modes of transportation as a
way to address long-term traffic capacity problems in the heavily traveled Ferry Street Bridge
corridor. Neither group recommended a new transportation corridor in east Alton Baker Park.
The City Council has scheduled afollow-up work session on December 6 to discuss the
two groups' recommendations and the testimony presented at Monday's hearing.
Residents who would like to learn more about the various options are invited to stop by
the downtown Ferry Street Bridge information center. The center is located at 61 West Eighth
Avenue and is open from 11:30 to 1:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, and at other times by
appointment. More information is available by calling the City of Eugene Transportation
Division at 687-5218.
