The trees are available on a first-come, first- <br /> I <br /> j serve basis during the current tree-planting season, which runs from December through April, <br /> depending on the weather. <br /> The city established Neighborwoods in 1992 as a partnership program in which residents, <br /> neighborhood organizations, businesses, and local government work together to plant and <br /> maintain street trees that enhance the environment and the uni ue identit of each nei hborhood. <br /> q Y g <br /> The city provides the trees, tools, stakes, planting help, and training. Residents volunteer to <br /> plant the trees in public rights-of--way along neighborhood streets and to water and care for the <br /> i <br /> <br /> ~ trees during the first few critical years. <br /> In 1992, volunteers planted more than 600 trees of 47 different species. The types of <br /> trees selected for the Neighborwoods program are compatible as street trees and grow well in <br /> the local area. <br /> To volunteer to plant trees, or for more information about the Neighborwoods program, <br /> call Jan Staszewski, the city's urban forester, at 687-5359. <br /> <br />
