This is the second year of a long-term program to <br /> locate and correct defects in sanitary sewer lines that allow stormwater an d <br /> groundwatey~ to enter the sanitary sewer system. <br /> The Jefferson/Friendly area between 22nd and 26th avenues and between <br /> Madison and Polk streets will be the first area tested this summer. Four <br /> other neighborhoods also will be tested, including two additional areas in <br /> the Jefferson/Friendly neighborhood, the University area, and the River <br /> View/Agust~ neighborhood. Each test area will take approximately two weeks <br /> to complete. This summer's smoke testing program will be completed by <br /> mid-September. <br /> During the testing, crews will use a nontoxic, white smoke that is safe <br /> i <br /> for plants and animals and leaves no stains or residues. Smoke testing is <br /> endorsed b the Environmental Protection Agency in all regions of the <br /> country. <br /> Smoke is released into the sewer lines to locate defects and improper <br /> connections'in the sanitary sewer lines. If the private sewer connections and <br /> building plumbing have been installed correctly, the smoke should not enter <br /> homes, but instead travel through the drains and out roof vents.
