Public Works
I', City of Eugene
I 858 Pearl Street
Eugene, Oregon 97401
(503) 687-5262
NEWS RELEASE
AUGUST $5, 1993
CONTACT; Paul Anderson, 687-5517
From Public Information Section, 687-5523
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
BIKE PATH REPAIRS SCHEDULED
Reconstruction work on the Fern Ridge bike path from Polk Street to the
Blue Heron Bridge near Chambers Street is scheduled to begin September 1.
The well-traveled section of bike path has deteriorated in a number of
places due to the poor soil conditions next to the Amazon. In an effort to
stop the deterioration, the city's contractor, Eugene Sand & Gravel, will
installa 12-inch-thick cement-treated base with four inches of asphalt
surfacing. If the heavier base is effective in preventing deterioration, the
techniq~le can be applied to other sections of bike path.
During the reconstruction work, which is expected to take about a month
to compl'~ete, bicyclists and pedestrians will be detoured to the concrete
walkway 'on the south side of the Amazon.
~'3s 2~~
T e',lpr~oject also includes an overlay of the paved approach on the west
side of ',Garfield to the bike path next to Westmoreland housing. Money for
the proj;~ect will come from funding for rehabilitation of the city's bike path
system. II The city rates the condition and use of local bike paths to

determine where repairs or reconstruction are most needed.
