NEAR 20TH AVE. <br /> Con truction is under way on Patterson Street south of 20th Avenue to improve the <br /> pedestrian rossing between South Eugene High School and the Eugene Family YMCA. <br /> The Eugene Public Works Department is installing a raised crosswalk and narrowing <br /> the roadwa to 26 feet to make it safer for pedestrians to cross Patterson Street. The new <br /> design will include sidewalk access ramps for persons using wheelchairs. Patterson Street <br /> will contin e to have two southbound travel lanes, and onstreet parking will be adjusted to <br /> accommod to the new crossing. <br /> Co struction began last week and is expected to be completed by September 1. <br /> During co struction, motorists are likely to encounter lane closures and traffic congestion. <br /> Alternate t avel routes are recommended. <br /> i <br /> Th project has been planned for more than five years and is part of the Public Works <br /> Departure is ongoing effort to incorporate pedestrian-friendly designs on city streets and to <br /> i <br /> ~ _ <br /> improve p destrian safety. Several hundred pedestrians cross Patterson Street at this location <br /> daily. Th $30,000 project is being paid for through City of Eugene funds budgeted for <br /> traffic ope ation improvements. <br /> <br />
