The 108-mile link, called the "Eugene to Pacific Crest <br /> Trail," wil be officially opened during a sign dedication ceremony at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, <br /> October 2 , at Greenway Park inthe center of Lowell between Moss and Pioneer Streets. <br /> Organizers supporters, and officials from the four cities will gather to open the new access <br /> i <br /> to the Paci is Crest Trail. During the ceremony, each city will receive directional signs to <br /> post on th trail in their respective cities. <br /> I <br /> Eu ene resident and project coordinator Jerold Williams said the idea for the Eugene <br /> to Pacific rest Trail was born in the 1960s and 70s when federal legislation encouraged <br /> states to b ild trail networks. Willams said most trail systems locate trail heads at some <br /> distance fr m population centers. The Eugene to Pacific Crest Trail, however, begins in the <br /> center of etropolitan Eugene, at the base of the Ferry Street bridge.
