Just ask any of the more than 900 employees of 35 area <br /> i <br /> firms who anticipated in the first annual Business Bicycle Challenge, held June 10 to <br /> promote bi cle commuting as an alternative mode of transportation. <br /> Lea ing the pack among businesses with 25 or fewer employees was Recreational <br /> Equipment, Inc. (REI), which had a 100 percent employee participation rate for the challenge. <br /> Rainbow O tics was the winner in the category for businesses with 25 to 100 employees with <br /> an 85 perc t participation rate. Dynamix earned afirst-place award for businesses with more <br /> than 100 a ployees with a 35 percent participation rate. And the University of Oregon <br /> Health Cen er took top honors among public agencies with a 34 percent participation rate. <br /> Ov all, the 35 businesses employ 6,338 people, 920 of whom rode their bikes to work <br /> last Friday. The employers ranged from Sacred Heart Health Care System (with 1,575 <br /> employees, 7 percent of them participating in the bicycling challenge) to Heritage Research <br /> (with six a ployees, 33 percent of them biking to work). <br /> i <br /> Not surprisingly, bicycle businesses .produced a strong showing, with Green Gear <br /> <br /> i <br /> Cycling s ring a 91 percent participation rate and Burley Design Cooperative getting 74 <br /> percent of is employees to bike to work for the challenge. <br /> (more) <br /> <br />
