? ~ -
. ~ I,
Public Works
JUNE 20 1994 Administration
City of Eugene
858 Pearl Street
CONTA T: Brant Williams, Traffic Engineer, 687-5237 Eugene, OR 97401
From Pu lic Information Section, 687-5523 (503) 687-5262
FOR IATE RELEASE
TUDY FINDS TRAFFIC ACCIDENTS ON DECLINE IN EUGENE
Th number of traffic accidents in Eugene continued to decline in 1993, according to
the Euge a Public Works Department.
Th department's recently prepared traffic accident summary for 1993 lists 2,049
reported ccidents in Eugene during the year, down from 2,123 accidents in 1992. The
1993 acci ent total represents a 10 percent decrease from the 1989 total and is the fourth
consecuti a year in which the total number of accidents has decreased. During the same

' period, th number of injury accidents fell to 887 from 1,016, a 12 percent decline.
The 1993 report lists 24 accidents involving pedestrians and 61 accidents involving
bicyclists. Both totals were lower than the 1992 totals for pedestrians and cyclists and also
are below the 10-year averages for those types of accidents.
Cit Traffic Engineer Brant Williams sees a link between fewer accidents and more
funding f r traffic safety in Eugene. "Since 1989, the City has increased its commitments
to traffic nforcement and tr2~ffic safety improvements," Williams said. "Besides the larger
scale str reconstruction projects, smaller improvements such as changes in traffic controls
and the in tallation of sidewalks, access ramps, bike lanes, turn lanes, and street lighting
can make real difference when it comes to overall traffic safety.
