The <br />', event is p rt of a local observance of National Public Works Week. <br />Superintendent Margaret Nichols is the featured speaker for the opening <br />,, ceremony, v~hich begins at 11 a.m. <br />The t eme this year is "Environmentality," which focuses on the work <br />that Publi Works staff does each day to protect the quality of life in <br />Eugene. D ring the day-long event, community residents will have an <br />opportunit to operate or ride in Public Works equipment, such as street <br />sweepers, ack hoes, dump trucks, aerial lift trucks, and much more. Many of <br />the displa s include actual hands-on involvement. Just a sampling of the <br />topics of he displays include protecting wetlands, cleaning up the air by <br />using alte native modes, assembling pipes to build a sewer line; landscaping <br />in the run ay clearance strips at the airport, a scale model of a farm <br />showing ho sludge is applied, how much vandalism costs the public, and much, <br />', much more.
