Public Works
N E W S R E L E A S E City of Eugene
858 Pearl Street
September 24, 1990 Eugene, Oregon 97401
(503) 687-5262
CONTACT: Paul Anderson, Project Manager, 683-6854
Diane Bishop, Bicycle Coordinator, 687-5298
From Sand a Gleason, Public Information, 687-5523
FOR IMMED ATE RELEASE
FERN RIDGE BICYCLE PATH TO BE REPAIRED
Begi Wing on Wednesday, Sept. 26, Wildish Corvallis Construction Co.,
' under con ract to the city of Eugene, will begin reconstructing a section of
,I
the Fern idge bicycle path, which runs along the north side of the Amazon
Channel. The work will start just west of Garfield and will continue to
I
li
approxima ely Chambers Street. The contractor plans to work between 7:30
a.m. and p.m., Monday through Friday. The project is scheduled for
completeo by Oct. 30.
The sphalt on the bike path is breaking and cracking because the clay
soil unde the path is expansive, which means it expands when it gets wet and

i
contracts as it dries. The city is exploring several construction techniques
to help s abilize the soil. For this section, Wildish plans to remove the
broken asphalt, replace it with a new rack base, then resurfaced it with

i
asphalt oncrete.
i
The bike path will be completely closed during the work, and bicyclists
will be etoured to 12th Avenue. Detour signs will be posted at several
places along the bike path.
Som sections of guard rail also will be removed during the project but
will be eplaced when the construction is completed.
The $51,147 project is funded through the city's bike path preservation
program.
~i 4t
