r
News Rele se Floodplain Management Program
December 1991
Page 3
Alth ugh insurance was made available to those who voluntarily wanted
it, it became apparent that property owners did not take advantage of the
coverage. Many property owners nationwide still relied on disaster
assistan a after major flooding occurred in 1972. In 1973, Congress again
took action and passed the Flood Disaster Protection Act of 1973 that stated
that flo d insurance was required if a property owner desired any form of
federall related financial assistance to acquire or develop insurable
structur s within a special flood hazard area. This requirement is still in
effect t day. Federal agencies, such as the Farm Home Administration,
Veterans Administration, and Small Business Administration cannot guarantee a
loan for an uninsured building located is such an area.
The city offers a free map determination service that can identify
whether r not property is located within a special flood hazard area (as
identifi d by the Federal Emergency Management Agency).
