The plan was released for public <br /> review in arly September. The plan outlines policies and proposed actions <br /> 1'or tree s lection, trees on publicly owned property, trees on private <br /> property, eritage trees, and on educational approaches. <br /> The g als and policies outlined in the draft plan will help guide the <br /> r.ity in it actions and decisions affecting trees within the city limits and <br /> I, will help ity staff manage trees on both public and private property. The <br /> ~ plan addre ses many of the tree-related concerns voiced by citizens in the <br /> East few y ars and focuses on the overall management of urban trees. <br /> Publi ly owned trees included trees along public street rights-of-way <br /> i <br /> and in par s, the downtown mall, publicly owned riparian areas, and land <br /> owned by p blic agencies other than the city. The section addressing <br /> F~rivately wned trees discusses two major issues: retaining existing trees <br /> <<nd adding more trees to the urban landscape. A section on heritage trees <br /> i~ocuses on preserving those trees that predate the city's founding. Two <br /> ~~pproaches have been identified for protecting heritage trees: a mandatory <br /> <<pproach a d a voluntary approach.
