~
Public Works
City of Eugene
N E W S R E L E A S E 858 Pearl Street
Eugene, Oregon 97401
(503) 687-5262
SEPTEMBER 24, 1992
CONTACT: John Emmons, Public Works Transportation, 687-5128
From Sand a Gleason, Public Information, 687-5523
FOR IMMED ATE RELEASE
TRAFFIC SIGNALS CHANGING ON RIVER ROAD
Traf is signals at four intersections on River Road between River Avenue
and Irvin Road are in the process of being changed to reduce congestion in
the heavi y traveled commercial area around Beltline Road and the Santa Clara
shopping enter. Changes are being made to enhance traffic flow and will
include i stalling new types of left-turn signals and improving signal timing

~ to provid better traffic flow along River Road.
Over the next three weeks, crews from the city of Eugene Public Works
Departmen will install new signal heads at River Avenue, Division Avenue,
Santa Cla a Avenue, and Irving Road/Hunsaker Lane. The new signals will
change fr m an exclusive left turn to either a permissive left turn, a
protected left turn, or a protected/permissive left turn. The changes to the
left-turn operations will allow motorists to make left turns at the
intersections without having to wait for an exclusive green left-turn arrow.
Acco ding to John Emmons from the Public Works Transportation Division,
the new signals should reduce stops and delays for motorists on River Road
and shoul smooth out the flow of traffic. Emmons cautioned that there is a
tradeoff. "Although the improvements should reduce bottlenecks at left-turn
lanes on fiver Road, there may be somewhat longer delays for traffic on the
side streets that are trying to turn onto River Road," said Emmons.
i
i
