The annual award is given to the individual, group, or <br /> agency th t implements a low-cost project generating a significant return or <br /> public aw reness in the area of commuter transportation. Bishop said she <br /> believes his is the first time the award has recognized a bicycling project. <br /> Bish p and the 12-member bicycle committee put together a number of <br /> Bicycle C mmute Week activities, including a Saturday bicycle fair, a ride to <br /> work with a city councilor, an in-house alternative modes competition, <br /> "buddy" r'des, and "Pork-and-Ride" stops offering free breakfasts for bicycle <br /> commuters. Total cost for the week-long event was $888. <br /> "Any time we can show the public how easily adaptable the bicycle is to <br /> commuting we feel we have made strides," said Bishop. "Even if people don't <br /> immediately jump on their bikes, the seed is planted." <br /> more <br /> <br />
