Page 5
The divi ion is in the process of transitioning to high-dump units as old
{ sweepers are replaced. This will allow us to implement a drop-box program
for dump ng sweeper loads. Currently loads are dumped on city streets at
predeter fined locations. They are retrieved within one to two days using a
self-loa ing, five-yard dump truck.
Switchin to the drop boxes solves two problems. First, dumping a condensed
pile of treet debris back onto the street raises concerns about
environm ntal degradation and storm water quality. Secondly, real estate
developm nt and public concerns about aesthetics and the environment are
forcing s to move dumping sites further and further from the city's core,
creating longer hauling distances and increased operational costs.
i
The new rogram will begin with four or five rented drop boxes that will be
placed a several locations around the city. A private vendor will collect
the full boxes and replace them with empty ones. The estimated annual cost
for the ilot program is $22,000 a year.
New A r achs to Seasonal Swee in Im roves Efficienc
The fins program enhancement involved changing the scheduling of sweeping
assignme is during the year. During spring and summer months, the routing is
schedule primarily as outlined above.
