Shelby, director of aviation at Mahlon <br /> Sweet Airp rt for 16 years, formally announced his plans to retire. In a <br /> letter to hristine Andersen, director of the city of Eugene public works <br /> department, and to the airport commission, Shelby outlined his plans to <br /> retire this fall and said he had decided to leave prior to the beginning of <br /> I~ the next capital improvement program. He offered his assistance in recruiting <br /> the new aviation director to ensure a smooth and successful transition. <br /> ~I <br /> Discussing his reasons for retiring, Shelby said, "the bonds have been <br /> sold and the funding is in place and we have a top notch contractor on <br /> <br /> ~ board. I feel that, except for handling the dust, the airport expansion <br /> <br /> j project h s successfully become a reality, and eight years of work are <br /> nearly fi fished. I was planning to retire when the project was completed, <br /> but in to king beyond the terminal expansion project to the future needs <br /> of the ai port, I felt now was the time to bring in someone who could begin <br /> the next eries of projects and become involved in the new master plan." <br /> "Und r the new federal aid legislation, we have anew capital program to <br /> implement within the next five years.
