2-2-2
Main R nway 16-34 will close Thursday, August 10 and reopen Monday, August
28. During the construction process, all air traffic, including commercial
carriers an general aviation aircraft, will be diverted to Runway 3-21. Work
on the inte section of the two runways will be conducted at night while airport
operations are closed.
Because Runway 3-21 is shorter in length than the main runway (Runway 3-21
is 5200 fe t; Main Runway 16-34 is 6200), it will be necessary for commercial
jet Carrie s to reduce the weight of their loads on departing flights to enable
easy lift ff in a shorter distance. To reduce weight, jet carriers will limit
the number of passengers and amount of cargo on each departing flight during
the 18-day construction period. All load adjustments and limitations have been

I
entered in o the airlines' computerized reservation systems.
Resur acing the main runway is necessary because certain areas of the
I
existing s rface have begun to show signs of deterioration. To maintain
maximum sa ety of the main runway, airport and airline officials elected to
curtail op rations briefly to allow reconstruction to be done this month.
i
~ The t tal cost of the project is $380,000. The contract was awarded to
Morse Brot ers Construction of Eugene.
E
-End-

,

i

i

i
