PUBLIC WORK DEPARTMENT • 858 PEARL EUGENE, OREGON 97401 <br /> NEWS RELEASE <br /> October 11 1989 <br /> CONTACT: eter Helzer, Artist, 345-7485 <br /> andra Gleason, Public Works Public Information, 687-5523 <br /> an Bohman, Project Manager, Development Department, 687-5446 <br /> FOR IMMEDI TE RELEASE <br /> NEW BRONZE SCULPTURES KEEP WATCH OVER DOWNTOWN PLAY AREA <br /> On Th rsday, October 12, at 4:30 p.m. in the Eugene downtown mall play <br /> area on Br adway between Charnelton and Willamette Streets, sculptor Peter <br /> Helzer wil install the last of the kid-sized bronze animals he was <br /> commission d to create under the city's Arts In Public Places Ordinance. <br /> Helze is a local artist who was selected by the city's Visual Arts <br /> Commission in early April to create bronze animal sculptures for the five <br /> pedestals in the downtown mall play area. Helzer was selected because of <br /> his abilit to capture the physical, mental, and emotional components of the <br /> project an to meet the spirit of the children who would use the space. <br /> Alre y installed are a porcupine, two standing otters, three stacking <br /> skunks, an a mother raccoon with three raccoon babies climbing on her. A <br /> bear cub r "bear chair" will be installed on Thursday. The bear is just big <br /> enough to comfortably hold a three or four year-old, Helzer said. <br /> "The series of whimsical animals were designed to scale," Helzer added. <br /> "For two eeks, I studied children who were playing in the new play area. <br /> After analyzing about 100 children, I found that mostly two to five year olds <br /> used the pace.
