"This public-private partnership provides significant benefits to the whole community as well,"says Robin Hostick, parks
planner and author of the 2002 Skinner Butte Park Master Plan that documents a long-range vision for the park. "By
enlisting a local organization, the City is able to leverage resources, through volunteer and community efforts and
neighborhood matching grants and other funds, and accomplish more of the plan's vision much more quickly and offer so
much more to the community."One unique program that Moore will pilot at the new community gardens is"organizational"
plots, where a larger plot is rented to a group of people, such as seniors, students or people with disabilities who might not
otherwise rent a plot on their own. Other benefits include bringing more positive activity to underutilized areas of the park,
generating interest in gardening and local history through educational programming, and building community through
shared responsibility, cooperation and engaging diverse community members—all key aspects of the master plan that
community members helped develop two years ago.
The community gardens is the first stage of a proposed Historical Community Farm. The concept includes developing the
new gardens, greenhouses, display gardens, accessible garden beds, a barn structure, and a "harvest festival"gathering
space.
